Ohio Department of Public Safety
Accredited Programs :
These programs meet the objectives of the National Course Curriculum
for each level of emergency responder, as well as Ohio criteria.
Following successful completion of any of these programs the individual
is prepared to take the National Registry Examination for state
certification to practice under medical direction at the respective
level, as prescribed by the Ohio Revised Code:
First Responder
- this 40-hour program prepares individuals for initial response to
emergency situations prior to the arrival of an ambulance, and is
primarily designed for fire and police personnel, but is not restricted
to these groups.
Emergency Medical
Technician-Basic - this 130-hour program prepares
individuals for entry-level ambulance response, and is the minimum
certification level which one must have in order to staff an ambulance
in the state of Ohio. This program encompasses 120 hours of classroom,
lab, and testing, as well as a minimum of 10 hours clinical experience
on the emergency vehicle.
Emergency Medical
Technician-Intermediate - this 130-hour program includes
advanced assessment techniques and training in the treatment of shock,
including intravenous fluid administration and interpretation of simple
cardiac rhythms, as well as administration of certain medications.

RIO GRANDE-Paramedic Training Program - this 720-hour program admits
participants who are already minimally certified as EMT-Basic in the State of Ohio and provides
training in the most advanced pre-hospital techniques, including
specialized airway management, emergency drug therapies, intensive
cardiac rhythm interpretation, and other skills. It combines classroom,
lab, hospital clinical, and vehicle apprenticeship hours. This program
complies with the new curriculum.

Basic Cardiac Life Support
Courses - these include several AHA curriculum courses
in Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation including:
Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid
- This course targets all lay rescuers, such
as school children, family members of patients at risk for sudden
cardiac death, and other laypersons who want to learn rescue skills for
loved ones. The course teaches rescuers skills in CPR and relief of
airway obstruction. Three separate programs exist for: A. Adult CPR B.
Infant and Child CPR C. CPR for All Ages
BLS for the Healthcare Proovider
- This course teaches the skills of CPR for victims of all ages
(including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and
oxygen) and relief of foreign body airway obstruction. It is intended
for participants who work in a healthcare setting and those who are
required to take a healthcare provider course for employment. A
course completion card is issued for all participants in a BLS for
Healthcare Provider course who successfully complete the written
examination and skill demonstration.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support
(ACLS) - This two day course trains healthcare providers in
advanced methods of cardiac care, stroke care and 12 lead EKG. It features
lectures and "hands on" skill stations designed to enhance cardiac care.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support
Course (PALS) - this two-day course trains healthcare
personnel in advanced methods of life support for the pediatric
population. It features lectures and "hands on" skill stations designed
to enhance emergency care procedures for children.
American College of Emergency
Physicians (ACEP):
Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS)-
this two-day course utilizes lecture material, demonstrations, and skill stations to teach the latest
information and methods of dealing with victims of trauma. The course
is offered at both the Basic and Advanced levels.
APCO Communications Courses:
courses leading to certification as a telecommunicator and emergency
medical dispatcher are offered by the SEOEMS Communications Department in conjunction with the
training department.
Other Continuing Education
Courses:
The SEOEMS Training Center offers assorted continuing education courses
throughout the year to assist EMS personnel with completing state and
national requirements for recertification. While primarily offered for
employees, these courses are also open to non-employees for a small
per-hour fee. An annual calendar of these classes is published every
January and can be viewed on the web by clicking the training calendar link.
Public Education:
Pediatric Safety Program
featuring "Bee Safe" - our bigger-than-life bumble bee,
recovering from an antenna injury suffered through failure to watch
where he was flying, is available to schools, youth groups, and
community parades and gatherings to teach child safety. This
award-winning program was developed by SEOEMS personnel to develop
meaningful interaction with children on a variety of safety and
injury-prevention issues.
Speakers' Bureau -
SEOEMS can provide speakers on a variety of subjects involving
emergency medical response, as well as squad and equipment
demonstrations for civic and youth groups. Programs can be tailored to
meet the needs of any audience.
